It is a well written book which guides you through the practices of worlds best cyclists during the late nineties and early 2000's. With practices I mean Doping practices. How the team-doctors put the full responsibility in the hands of the cyclists themselves. How the cyclists found their way around and how to deal with anti-doping agencies. Also it shows a little how the UCI was involved. It's a complex world while the cyclists have to perform extraordinary and the team, sponsors and spectators expect nothing but the best. They are under a lot of pressure and of course we, including the cyclists, all know that it's wrong to use performance enhancing drugs. Tyler is very open it what he used and how. It's an interesting and exciting book to read.
Umstrittenen Personen, die heute ein Buch schreiben, wird zunächst gern unterstellt nur Geld mit ihrem Buch verdienen zu wollen. Ob nun Sarrazin oder Hamilton. Unsicherheit macht sich breit, dennPOSITIONIERE ICH MEIN GELD RICHTIG, WENN ICH DIESES BUCH KAUFE ?Nach all dem ?Meine Antwort ist definitiv: ja.Hamilton und sein Co-Autor packen ordentlich aus; es geht quasi gleich auf der ersten Seite los. Zahlreiche wichtige Persönlichkeiten werden erwähnt und/oder näher beschrieben. Wichtige Fahrer, wie Riis, Ullrich, Pantani, Julich und natürlich auch Armstrong, aber auch Ärzte wie Ferrari und Co., sowie das private Umfeld einiger Fahrer werden beschrieben.Hamilton beginnt aber bei sich selbst (kleine Historie zur eigenen Person), fängt in den frühen 90ern mit den ersten Stunden der EPO-Ära an, erzählt vom Einstieg des zu Beginn rein amerikanischen Postal-Teams ins Renngeschehen in Europa. Er fasst Rennen und Etappen verschiedenster Rundfahrten kurz und knackig zusammen, erwähnt den Festina-Skandal und zahlreiche andere Ereignisse, an die man sich selbst noch ganz gut erinnert. Aber erst durch dieses Buch erfährt man sie eben aus Sicht eines Insiders.Neben diesem Grobgerüst des Buches werden aber auch viele interessante Details erwähnt, wie zum Beispiel Informationen über EPO selbst (Preise, Wirkung, wie es im Team verteilt wurde (VOR und NACH dem Festina-Skandal etc.) aber auch der EPO-Jargon. Um "Ich brauche mal wieder etwas EPO" zu sagen, verwendete man "Ich muss mal wieder mit Edgar reden.".Es gibt Zitate und Originalaussagen von verschiedenen Fahrern (Riis, Hampsten, Mercier etc.) zum Thema Doping, wobei meistens (aber nicht immer) darauf hingewiesen wird, was bewiesen und was Spekulation ist.Auch gibt es zahlreiche Fußnoten, die immer wieder interessante Infos hergeben, wie z.B. dass mit dem Aufkommen von EPO die Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit der Tour von 37 km/h auf 41 km/h gestiegen ist (jeder der selbst Rennrad fährt, weiß wie gigantisch dieser Sprung ist).Oder welche überirdischen, vorher noch nie bei der Tour de France gesehenen Leistungen so mancher Fahrer während eines Rennens gezeigt hat, ob nun ein Riis oder das Festina- oder das ONCE Team als Gesamtmannschaft. Oder wie Fahrer und Ärzte, die nicht dopen wollten, direkt oder indirekt gegangen wurden.Hamilton selbst ist schuldig, aber er zeigt auf, wie schnell man reinrutscht obwohl man eigentlich "nein" hätte sagen können. Die erste Pille die er genommen hat, bekam er übrigens von seinem Arzt ohne zu wissen was es ist. Erst später erfuhr er, dass er Testosteron verabreicht bekommen hat. Der Arzt sagte lediglich "Nimm das, es ist gut für die Regeneration".Die Fahrer waren also irgendwie Opfer und Täter zugleich. Zu Beginn vermutlich eher Opfer, weil sie meines Erachtens in einer der Eskalationsauktion* ähnlichen Situation oder skrupellosen Ärzten ausgeliefert waren. Zum Schluß waren sie dann definitiv Täter.Ich habe diese Rezension geschrieben, als ich bei Seite 100 von 290 angekommen war. Ich habe beschlossen, nicht das Ende des Buches für diese Rezension abzuwarten, weil die ersten 100 Seiten bereits äußerst interessant, an keiner Stelle langweilig und sogar ein paar Lacher drin hatten, zumal nach schlappen 300 Seiten die Rezension so lang geworden wäre, dass sie eh keiner lesen würde.Ich wollte nur vier Sterne vergeben, aber ich habe keinen Grund gefunden den fünften abzuziehen.* Bei der Eskalationsauktion verhalten sich die Teilnehmer irrational, obwohl sie alle Informationen haben, um sich eigentlich rational zu verhalten. "Viel mehr ging es nur noch darum, zu gewinnen, koste es was es wolle." – „Anders ausgedrückt: Man hatte zuviel investiert, um jetzt noch auszusteigen.“ [Reto U. Schneider, Das Buch der verrückten Experimente].Das passt auch gut zum Verhalten Armstrongs, dem Geständnis von Alex Zülle (S.73). Ironischerweise wurde dieses Verhalten ausgerechnet von M. Shubik in den USA beobachtet und untersucht (damals Vietnamkrieg etc.). Soll hier aber nicht heißen, dass EPO aus USA rüber zur Tour de France kam. Dem Buch nach brachten erst spanische und italienische Ärzte EPO ins Postal-Team (allerdings wurden sie entsprechend angeheuert, Ferrari von Armstrong selbst)
After reading this excellently written book I felt like I knew all there was to know about doping in the world of cycling. Of course we all suspected it anyway, but Hamilton's insider confession is still absorbing to read and sometimes shocking. And depressing. Even if you sometimes perhaps feel that Hamilton is using the opportunity to make himself look good and justify his deeds, that does not diminish the value of the book's information at all. His brief portraits of some of the greats of cycling like Bjarne Riis and Jan Ullrich are fascinating, as are his descriptions of the evil doctors who made a fortune peddling drugs to the athletes, displaying indeed many characteristics of dealers. And of course his description of the almost psychopathic Lance Armstrong is gripping. At any rate when Armstrong finally got around to his "confession" with Oprah Winfrey, I was no longer interested and didn't watch. What for? To see this scheming, unscrupulous fellow team up with Winfrey in a media show with only a view to saving his own skin? No thanks. Hamilton has at least moved on.
The pure honesty of the book is its most valuable asset. I respect Tyler for that.Having watched Tyler for most of his European racing days, the description of the pre-Tour years were especially informative for me.What I missed was more responsibility in hindsight, the stories of 'spectacualar' wins were too centered on the winning, they lacked a comment on how those wins had been made possible. That is why I detached myself a bit while reading on, a sarcastic inner voice always repeating 'yeah you won, but how, and why don't you say something about that here?'Still a recommendation, a vivid description of doping in practice, sports business, and an insight into the part of the 'gladiator' in the arena.
